Different Types of Planners

Planners help students get organized and stay on top of a busy schedule. Finding a planner that works for you takes some trial and error. The website Personal Planner For Me shares four different types of planners to help boost your productivity:

  1. Minimalist / Entry Planners: These planners provide a great starting point for beginners. They usually have basic boxes and sections to write things in. It allows students to learn how to use a planner without getting overwhelmed.

  2. Bullet Journals: The concept behind this type of planner is that you create bullet points to detail your schedule. It also allows the students to be more creative, as there aren’t any pre-drawn boxes. Bullet journals are adaptable to different scenarios and types of schedules.

  3. Digital Planners: These modern-era planners are great for students who are always on-the-go. Since the planner is digital, it’s much easier to input agendas and you can’t lose them. They also provide the benefit of sending reminders straight to your phone to keep you on track.

  4. Designer Planners: These planners have more structured layouts and are usually designed with a focus on productivity. There are many types of designer planners, so you may have to check the layout of several ones to see if they’ll help with your scenario. Some designers can get very purpose-specific (and can also be expensive!).

We are often asked whether we recommend app-based planners. Usually, apps work better for older students (college and maybe high school) than for younger students, but there’s really no age requirement. It depends on the individual student and whether the planner clicks with their mind.

The bottom line is that it’s important to find what works for you and your goals. This might mean trying several different things before deciding on what works best for you.
