Fun Facts about Spring Break

Spring break is a time for us to unwind and reset from our hectic schedules. We thought it would be interesting to share some fun facts about spring break, according to Fact Retriever and Fact City:

  • Spring Breaks started in the United States in the 1930s. However, by 1960, the concept had been embedded in school calendars. Historically, a two-week vacation was provided, though now many schools do a one-week break.

  • Every year, between 1.5 and 2 million students in the United States go on spring break, splurging over $1 billion in total.

  • The five top spring break destinations in the US are 1) Panama City Beach, Florida; 2) Cancun, Mexico; 3) Daytona Beach, Florida; 4) South Padre Island, Texas; and 5) Colorado’s ski resorts.

  • During spring break, South Padre Island averages 25 arrests per day and earns around $80,000 in fines.

  • In 2006, a new program was launched in the United States to promote an alternative to spring break partying. Students can choose to work in local neighborhoods and provide constructive assistance to communities as part of the nationwide "United Way" program.
