Spring break marks the final stretch students have to go through before school is finished for the year. This means finals and AP exams are coming up! Our goal at Star Tutoring is to help students become confident, independent learners. Here are some of the tips we share with our students:
Study early (and often): Having more time to review the content and test yourself will allow your brain to create deeper connections with the material. Spaced repetition can be used to help solidify the information. Making sure you have enough time to study will decrease stress levels and allow you to focus on understanding the topics rather than cramming the info at the last second.
Make use of practice questions: The best way to check for understanding is by testing yourself. Ask your teacher for old exams or for additional practice problems. Khanacademy.org is an excellent resource for math and other subjects. Having constant exposure to test questions on a topic will reveal what you don’t know, which then allows you to focus on the areas you need to improve the most.
Contextualize the information: Understanding how all of the information you're learning in class relates to one another will help you develop your critical thinking skills. When you face a hard problem, you won’t just have a bunch of information in your head, but you will know what the information actually means in relation to the problem. This will help you think outside of the box.
Ask questions: This might be the most important part of preparing for exams. If you don’t know something, ask! Ask your teacher, ask a friend, use your textbook, ask Google, and search on YouTube. If you are shy about asking questions during class, ask your teacher when class is dismissed or after school.
If you think your child might need a little extra help studying for their finals, AP, or IB exams, feel free to give us a call at 214-444-3431 or visit https://www.startutoringcenters.com.
